India’s D Gukesh Is The New World Chess Champion

D Gukesh India’s teenage chess prodigy defeated Ding Liren 7.5-6.5 in a nerve wracking but thrilling 14 match contest. With the scores tied at 6.5 a piece at the end of 13 games, Gukesh kept his cool, displayed exemplary patience and wrapped up the game after Ding Liren cracked under pressure. At 18 years D Gukesh became the youngest ever World Champion beating Gary Kasparov’s ( 22 yrs ) long standing record since 1985.

Gukesh became the second World Champion from India after the legendary Vishwanathan Anand won the crown in 2012.

Overwhelmed with emotions, Gukesh cried , bowed his head to the chess board, re- arranged the pieces on the board and very humbly acknowledged the cheers from the crowd in Singapore.

Dommaraju Gukesh was determination, focus and patience personified during the entire contest of 14 games. Ding Liren accepted the defeat and acknowledged that it was a fair result and that Gukesh deserved to be the Champion. Certainly Gukesh has made a country proud.
