Ashwin’s Day Out As Ind Gain Pole Position vs NZ in Mumbai Test

Ashwin takes a catch

A Gripping Day

It was another gripping day of fascinating cricket as Ind and NZ jostled for the upper hand at the Wankhede Stadium on Day 2 of the Mumbai Test.

Brilliant Ajaz

Ajaz Patel who has great memories of the ground ( having snared 10 wickets in an innings when he visited Mumbai last time ), bowled with great control, got a Fifer and hastened India’s innings to a close, with the hosts just 28 ahead.

Ashwin ‘s Spectacular Catch: The Gamechanger

Batting 2nd the Black Caps lost their skipper Latham in the very first over, castled by a lovely pacy in dipper from Akash Deep, which shattered the timber no end. However Will Young and Daryl Mitchell got together after Devon Conway’s exit and stitched a 50 run partnership. The duo were looking threatening, but then Ashwin, the old war horse produced the catch of the match to get rid of the dangerous Daryl Mitchell. Running backwards from mid-on, a good 19 metres, Ashwin lunged at the last moment to get both his hands on the ball and completed a spectacular catch. This piece of brilliance from Ashwin, may just be the turning point in the match.

Phillips Foxed By Ashwin By The Ball Of The Series

The Kiwis were pushed back, but then Glenn Phillips belted a few over the ropes as the lead began to gallop. Phillips was in the mood, but Ashwin yet again, bowled for me the ball of the series. Just unable to read the ball from the hand , Glenn Phillips totally misread the leg spinner from Ashwin. Turning his wrist at the last moment, the ball pitched on a good length, Phillips came up to defend thinking it to be an off spinner, the ball just spun the other way pegging back Phillips’ off stump. What a dismissal that was. The batter was completely foxed.

Jadeja Shines Too As India Marches Ahead

Ravindra Jadeja too bowled exceptionally well and by the end of the day’s play NZ were reduced to 171/9, just  143 runs ahead. India would look to quickly wrap up NZ tomorrow without much addition to the lead and then chase down the target efficiently. In all probability, tomorrow would be the last day of the match.

A Rollicking Day 2 was indeed Ashwin’s Day Out.
