What historical event fascinates you the most?
There are several historical events which have shaped the world into what it is today. For my generation and particularly the one before me, our Independence in 1947 is on top of the list. A historical event of great imminence, which has given me freedom. However, being a sports enthusiast, India’s victory at the 1983 World Cup at Lords, fascinates me.
It was a major sporting achievement for our country. Being in school those days we didn’t have much access to information barring the newspaper reports. Our Indian Team captained by Kapil Dev, was given not much of a chance, but the team surprised all and sundry.
Kapil Dev belted 175 against Zimbabwe to take India to an improbable win and beat West Indies in one of the league games too. Mohinder Amarnath’s swing bowling and the brilliant partnership between Yashpal Sharma and Sandip Patil to steer India to victory over England in the semi-finals ( this match was telecast live and we watched it on our black & white EC TV) was extraordinary.
Kapil Dev’s epic catch to dismiss the dangerous Viv Richards in the final was simply incredible. And finally Kapil Dev trapping Andy Roberts leg before wicket to win the World Cup was indeed a sublime moment.
There was a spring in my step when I went to school the next day. I was thrilled with what we had achieved. The rigours of school were totally forgotten. I was living in a different plane. Our Indian team had dared to dream and then achieved it. The self belief instilled by Kapil Dev in his team is legendary. The team took cudgels with the best, and did not bat an eyelid. The impossible had been attained.
That victory in 1983, strengthened the foundations of cricket in India, the rewards of which are being continuously reaped.
1983 World Cup Win, my fascinating moment in history.
