Rafael Nadal : The End Of An Era

Rafael Nadal Retirement

The Modern Great

A massive reservoir of energy, tenacity personified, consumed in determination, the undisputed King of court coverage and literally impossible to dislodge, Rafael Nadal one of the modern greats of tennis has announced his retirement. The Davis Cup tie between Spain and Netherlands in November would be his final appearance on court marking the end of a magical, stellar career.

A Great Champion & Tons of Silverware

22 Grand Slams, including a mammoth 14 French Open Crowns, 2 Australian Opens, 2 Wimbledon triumphs and 4 US Open Championships, along with an Olympic Gold Medal at the Beijing Games in 2008 and an Olympic Doubles Gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Rafael Nadal has won everything a tennis player could dream about and has set the bar so high that I seriously doubt if any player of this generation could ever emulate what Rafael Nadal has done.

The Spanish Gladiator On Clay

The Red Clay courts of Roland Garros in Paris are synonymous with Rafael Nadal. He has dominated Clay court tennis for 2 decades winning an astounding 14 times at the venue. No one literally could dislodge him from his firm perch at Roland  Garros. His opponents tried everything in the book, and prepared themselves mentally and physically to fight the Spaniard in his arena, but they all failed. Rafael Nadal fought like a gladiator in his Coloseum. His presence was towering and his belligerence intimidating as he made his opponents succumb to his wide range of skillful tennis on Clay. The Roland Garros would now wear a deserted look and will have a forlorn atmosphere in the absence of the Spanish giant.

The Bull Fighter Elsewhere

Rafael Nadal was no pushover on other surfaces as well and only the best of the best on their day could beat him. Though I am a Roger Federer fan I have to admit that Rafael Nadal enjoyed a clear edge over Federer and on Clay, it was just one-way traffic. His audacious stroke-making and the tenacity to survive and fight back is a matter of great learning. I still remember the Australian Open Final against Daniil Medvedev a couple of years ago. Nadal was down and out, but his sheer resilience made him rise from nowhere and win the match in 5 sets. It was truly amazing.

Nadal Unmatched

To find another Rafael Nadal would be asking for too much. His exploits are simply unmatchable and his retirement has made the game poorer. It’s not surprising that tickets for his last match have soared to unthinkable prices.
