Mo Salah : New Season, New Look, But Vintage Flair

Season 2024-25 of the English Premier League took off last weekend. Liverpool, who had stood 3rd last season, were playing for the first time under their new Manager Arne Slot. The Dutchman had replaced Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season last year. Liverpool fans and critics of the game were looking forward to see how the Reds would perform under their new manager. Liverpool were slated to play Ipswich Town at Portman Road. The Tractor Boys as they are nicknamed, Ipswich were making a re-entry to the premier league after a good 5 years.

Ipswich Town began brilliantly and kept the Liverpool defence under pressure, but the Reds survived and once the team got into the groove in the second half, a clear gap between the two teams emerged. Salah, wearing a new look, with a different hairdo altogether, looked intense and purposeful with the ball. A fine assist by him and Jota had scored the first goal for Liverpool. Minutes later Salah, moving quickly from the right was on the mark and Liverpool were leading with two goals.

The goal from Salah was his 9th in the opening weekend of a premier league season, taking him to the peak of a celebrated pack ( Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney, Alan Shearer and Jamie Vardy have 8 goals each ). Another record for Salah in the history of the premier league. What I saw of Salah in his latest avatar, is a welcome sign for Liverpool. The Egyptian surely looks hungry and driven. The competition beware. Another record was created in the Premier League when Ali-Al Hamadi came in the 74th minute to play for Ipswich to become the first Iraqi footballer to play in the competition.

Arne Slot’s Liverpool is underway, the next stop being Brentford this Sunday. A Red’s encore beckons.
