Earning A Nation’s Respect
The just-concluded World Cup has been a life changing event for Rohit Sharma. He not only captained the Indian side with extraordinary distinction but made a place in the hearts of billions of Indian fans, who roared with glee and cried with him as the tournament unfolded. He led the emotions of a nation desperately seeking glory and even though he felt just short of the ultimate prize, he unprecedentedly, won massive respect from across the nation.
A Brilliant Player, A Captain Likewise
Rohit, in my opinion, was in a different plane altogether during the competition. He played brilliantly, selflessly, and aggressively and gave the all-important start in almost every match India played. There is no denying that the success India had in the World Cup was a direct fallout of Rohit’s performance at the top of the order. He lifted the team and gave that vast amount of space for Virat Kohli to manoeuvre his innings and consolidate. The bowlers too played their part to the hilt and an almost invictus, unconquerable formula took shape under Rohit’s captaincy which eventually elevated him to iconic status amongst Indian captains.
An Expected Reaction
The news of Hardik replacing Rohit as captain of Mumbai Indians in the backdrop of the scenario discussed above had to have sharp reactions. In a country where Cricket is deeply rooted in the Indian psyche and so intensely intertwined with Indian emotions, Rohit is bound to get a wave of support and passionate backing in the face of such an announcement by Mumbai Indians. No wonder the backlash is enormous with the majority considering Rohit as the victim, more so when he is in the process of healing himself from the scars of the World Cup.
Ushering in the New
Cricket or for that matter any other sport does not follow emotions and general opinion, which is the brutal truth. Even though Rohit captained Mumbai Indians from 2013 to 2023 and won 5 titles in the process, Mumbai Indians are without a championship since 2020. Rohit’s reign at the helm has been exceptional and his leadership unquestionable, but change is the only constant and Mumbai Indians thought it best to bring about a change and usher in a new era, for which they cannot be vilified. Maybe the timing was not right and it would have been better if Rohit himself would have handed the baton to the next generation. Anyway, the decision of Mumbai Indians is a good one or a bad one, only time will tell.
I had proposed Surya Too
Even I had proposed in my previous post that Surya Kumar Yadav should be persisted with the captaincy of the Indian Team in the T20 format, to commence a new phase in Indian Cricket, in case Rohit was doubtful to play T20s and that his participation was a matter of conjecture.
Rohit – The White Ball Giant
Captaincy has a life span, it is momentary, but Rohit’s legacy will live on. He is a giant of white ball cricket and it would be difficult to find parallels to him, across the world.
Good Luck Captain !!
