IPL16 : Gujarat Titans (GT) vs Mumbai Indians (MI) – Qualifier 2 : Ahmedabad
Its time we moved over Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, for there has arrived a player, whose talent is immeasurable, whose class unquestionable, whose aura unmistakeable and whose presence incredibly regal. Shubhman Gill is without doubt India’s and the World’s next batting sensation.
Shubhman scored his 3rd century in the IPL this year in the Qualifier against Mumbai Indians at Ahmedabad yesterday night, an innings which simply lit up the Narendra Modi Stadium and knocked out the daylights of the MI bowlers. Scoring at an exhorbitant rate, Shubhman displayed an array of scintillating strokes piling up 129 runs in just 60 balls, with 10 sixes . The strokeplay was astounding to say the least with both power and finesse of towering proportions. The sound off the bat was melodious for a cricket follower as Shubhman hardly broke a sweat. His balance when striking the ball looked phenomenal and his poise absolutely exquisite. Shubhman has so much time while playing that he was hardly hitting the ball, he was simply caressing it, which in turn was just flying off his blade.
The innings was quite similar to the one he played against RCB, knocking them out of the tournament. However this one against MI was in a do or die game and therefore has to be ranked on a higher pedestal. No false shots, no cheeky turns, just pure and wonderfully slick strokeplay. I haven’t seen such an innings for quite sometime. The sublime talent coupled with a strong temperament makes Shubhman an extremely formidable player and in my opinion a Regal one at that.
Gujarat Titans amassed a huge 233 runs and even though MI have an awesome batting line-up, they had to play out of their skins to salvage the game, particularly with GT blessed with an incredible bowling attack. The start was sobered down with Rohit Sharma not lasting long and though the hugely impressive Tilak Verma put on a display of sorts, he was castled by the wily Rashid Khan.
Surya Kumar Yadav and Cameron Green gave a semblance of a fight, but the ask was too massive to conjure. Josh Little removed Green and the re-born Mohit Sharma scalped Surya Kumar Yadav to virtually shut doors on MI. The experienced Mohit went on to pick a fifer as MI collapsed in a tail spin, with GT emerging as deserved winners and earned the right to defend their title against CSK on Sunday.
A fine game of cricket bejewelled by a staggeringly sensational performance from Shubhman Gill, worth going miles to witness.
It’s all set up beautifully for the Final on Sunday evening. A cool GT against an even cooler CSK.
