The Mumbai Indians (MI) will take on the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) tonight, in what seems to be the contest for survival in the IPL 2026. MI are in 9th position with just 2 wins from 8 games, and CSK are slightly better at 7th position with 3 wins from 8 games. A loss tonight for either of the teams will make qualification for the playoffs a chance gone by.

I have been motivated to pen down this article after observing MI play, and more so by the performance of skipper Hardik Pandya not only as a player but also as an ‘actor’ on the field. It is a bit confusing, isn’t it? But I shall, in all earnest, clear all the confusion and put my point across.

Hardik Pandya has been a pale shadow of the player he is in the IPL 2026. India’s no. 1 all-rounder in ODIs and T20s, Hardik, for reasons unknown, has neither performed with the bat nor with the ball, and his captaincy too has not been able to uplift his team. He has scored just 128 runs and taken just 4 wickets at an economy rate of over 12 runs per over.

But what has perplexed me most is his on-field antics while fielding. A constant grimace, several gesticulations and a plethora of emotions which look more melodramatic than real. It appears as if he is putting on an act in a theatre rather than managing his team on the field. I am sure the players must have noticed it and may even be experiencing what I have felt watching Hardik.

MI, no wonder, don’t need the actor Hardik, but they need the player to fire and lift MI from the pits they have fallen into. The tournament is more or less over for one of the most powerful franchises in the IPL, though technically, they still have a chance to qualify, but Hardik needs to pull down the actor’s robe.

A big game is coming up tonight.
