On Top of the Heap

On the 7th of February 2023, a 39 year old record in the NBA* was broken when Los Angeles ( LA ) Lakers squared up against Oklahoma City Thunder. The record for the most points scored in NBA, held by Kareem Abdul Jabbar was closing in on 4 decades. Many greats of the game like Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal and  even the greatest  Michael Jordan felt short of the record. However, a record is meant to be broken and so it happened when LeBron James, playing for LA Lakers scored his 38,388th point of his professional NBA career. He had reached the top of the heap.

The Chosen Protagonist

LeBron James, one of the finest Basketball players in the history of the sport  and often compared to the great Michael Jordan had  reached a pinnacle of sorts. His story is one amazing fairy tale, hard to believe, but true to the core, hard to realise, but absolutely understandable, hard to rationalise, but  perfectly logical. LeBron James is a story no human can write as  it was well and truly scripted by the Almighty and LeBron James was His chosen protagonist. Lets have a look at LeBron Raymone James Jr.and the unfolding of his destiny. .

A Struggle to Survive

He was born to a teenager in Ohio, who raised him as a single mother, with his father having no influence on his life. When LeBron turned 3 his grandmother passed away and life took a difficult turn. They had to leave their house as they could not afford it. It was a hard struggle for LeBron’s mother to survive. They moved from place to place to find stability, but it was difficult to come by. LeBron’s mother realised that her son’s future was at stake and the present circumstances were detrimental for a  good life  for LeBron. He needed a better environment. But there was nothing in sight.

Frank Walker : The Good Samaritan

The script, nevertheless, was a special one and so walked in Frank Walker, a local youth Football Coach.  He had seen LeBron James and had been impressed by his attitude. He was a sober child, had a quiet  demeanour  and was very polite. He was taller than most children and in a way stood out in the crowd. The Walkers offered to take in LeBron James to give him a stable family environment which he so desperately needed. LeBron’s mother agreed and so LeBron moved in with the  Walkers.

The Humble LeBron

Wary of his new home LeBron was a well behaved child. He never ever troubled the Walkers. He became studious, did his homework, cleaned his place, made his bed, used the bathroom before everyone could and ate happily whatever was given to him. The  Walkers had no  complaints and LeBron seamlessly gelled with his foster family. He got along with the 3 children of Frank Walker. LeBron’s grades improved at school and he started playing basketball aged 9 at Frank Walker’s behest. He could meet his mother on the weekends and stayed with the Walkers on weekdays.

The Tall Warrior

The affection of a family, stability in life and discipline in day to  day affairs transformed LeBron into a fine student and basketball player. He eased into the game as if it was made for him and quickly began to rise. His work ethics remained of the highest order . As he became a young man he had reached a towering 6 ft 9 inches in height and was talked about as the most promising rookie. It was not too long before he made his debut in the NBA for the Cleveland Cavaliers and the rest his history. The soft spoken, disciplined   giant became one of the greatest Basketball players the world had ever  seen. 

The Historical Moment

7th of February 2023 signalled  a monumental achievement for LeBron James who was not even born when the record was created by  Kareem Abdul Jabbar. The occasion was so historical that the ongoing match was stopped the moment the record was broken, for an immediate on court ceremony. LeBron James gave a speech and embraced Abdul Jabbar and his family who were  present on the occasion.

From the quiet, shy, simpleton,  LeBron James has transgressed into a world wherein every word  he speaks is given  importance, his actions bring about change and his life is a lesson and his conquests absolute inspiration.  He is at the pinnacle of his powers. No wonder he has been rechristened ‘ King James ‘.
