As per the experts, motivational speakers, influencers, mentors, the Comfort Zone is the most maligned zone if you ever had to be in one. To be successful as they say, you can be in any zone but the comfort zone,  is the gospel truth. However, I have a slightly different opinion on the matter and though I do  agree to a piece of their advice, I am not a comfort zone hater, and I have my reasons for it.

I have read and heard several opinions about the Comfort Zone and how often or rather generally it is such a limiting factor when it comes to personal growth and eventual success. Comfort zones are nothing but shackles which prevent progress and may lead to decay of one’s intellectual and at times physical abilities. It is true that one should try to improve consistently and keep challenging oneself, but is it really that wrong to be in our comfort zones, is a question to be asked.

In my view when you start enjoying, living and  breathing what you are doing, you are in a comfort zone. There is an abundance of confidence which rubs onto performance. There is no fear of failure as you are absolutely adept at what you are doing. Success and excellence  is a given leading to a sense of fulfilment and happiness. Living in comfort zones make you a specialist; is a very important point to be understood.

Usain Bolt took to Athletics  rather than Football because he was comfortable at it. Michael Jordan preferred Basketball over Baseball, Jeev Milkha Singh preferred Golf over Athletics . Lionel Messi played for Barcelona for years, became one of the greats of the Game but cried  and left in pain.  There are hordes of examples where people have  enjoyed working hard in their  comfort zone and therefore excelled, like no other. They  became    specialists in their profession. Similarly all specialists in any profession are Comfort Zone Masters, be it surgeons, physicians, scientists, technocrats, artists and even politicians.

It would be naive in my opinion to leave comfort zones  and embrace something uncomfortable. The most overriding and predominant factors are conviction, consistency and hardwork which stem from deep interest and joy linked to that vocation. You will work harder, be more consistent, take up challenges and be creative in areas of your choice and comfort.

Comfort Zones are not bad and the next time if someone tells you to leave your comfort zone please do  have a rethink. Trust your conviction.  It is not required to be harsh on yourself to excel and be  successful . We should not forget that Archimedes was floating comfortably in his bath tub when he had that Eureka moment. Keep chipping away in your comfort  zones, the Eureka moment might not be far away.
