The Mounting Pressure
A comprehensive defeat to Wolverhampton last week was demoralising to say the least. The club which has scored the least number of goals in the EPL this season had scored two against the Reds and with the help of an Own Goal, the Wolves had blanked Liverpool 3-0. The pressure of delivering nothing short of a win was immense on Jurgen Klopp and his team as Liverpool squared up against Everton yesterday evening at Anfield.
A Reaffirmation of Faith
Beset with injuries to key players, Liverpool has been pushed to the wall, with calls for major changes becoming vociferous. However, Klopp retained the line up which had taken a beating from Wolves. It was a reaffirmation of faith in his players and as the night progressed, the faith was well and truly repaid by a team which we love to see. Everton on the other hand, facing a torrid time, losing their Manager and running the risk of relegation had beaten giants Arsenal last week and were looking up for the contest with Liverpool. An exciting match up was on the cards and so it transpired.
Two Blistering Counter Attacks
Post the exit of Sadio Mane, the front line of Liverpool has looked a bit unsettled with Salah taking huge pressure. But yesterday, all questions seemed to have been answered with Nunez, Cody Gakpo and Salah playing beautifully in tandem. In the 36th minute an Everton attack hit the goal post. A lucky escape for Liverpool as the ball reached Nunez after a quick pass from Salah and a blistering counter attack was launched. Nunez made a superb run from the left, the pace had caught the Everton defence napping, as he centered magnificently to Salah, who ensured a classy cool finish. One of the finest counters I have seen this season. Liverpool were ahead.
The 49th minute again saw a lovely pacy counter attack from the right flank with Alexander Arnold making a fine run. The centre was so precisely played that it travelled across the face of the Everton goal, with Cody Gakpo just required to do a tap in, which he effortlessly did to register his first goal for Liverpool. The Reds were ahead 2-0, with Anfield erupting in raptures.
The Reds might have turned the Corner
Two top notch counter attacks had done the trick. The pace from Liverpool was great, the intent was massive, the play was fearless, the midfield with the young Stefan Bajcetic, strong and enterprising too. The defence also stood up and ensured a clean slate. Liverpool looked really good and were deserving winners. I have an inkling that the Reds have just turned the corner. Hope I have guessed it right.
