Clint Eastwood : A Legend So Rare

He is 91, indefatigable, unrelenting, setting benchmarks, entertaining audiences, winning over critics, pushing creativity, winner of the Oscars, the Golden Globes and the Grammy, the actor, director, producer, composer Clint Eastwood, though still a mortal, is a super human, rarely seen or heard. His boundless energy coupled with an inexhaustible passion for story telling has made him a Legend like no other. I could not find a more inspiring story to start 2022.

Clint Eastwood was born on 31st May 1930 in San Francisco, California and was nicknamed ‘Samson’ by the hospital staff, as Clint was more than 11 pounds on birth. After his formal education, and before being rejected several times in auditions and  eventually making his debut in films in 1954, Clint Eastwood served as a Lifeguard at Fort Ord in North California. He had this uncanny knack of relentless perseverance, which eventually saw him enter the Film Industry.

Clint Eastwood over the years

His good, though rugged  looks and an  athletically built body presented him with many Cowboy Westerns and eventually Clint Eastwood shot to fame with the 1966 Sergio Leone directed ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’, with Clint essaying ‘The Good’ with consummate ease and seamless flair. This followed with the ‘Dirty Harry’ series  which  further strengthened Clint Eastwood in Hollywood and he came to be known as an actor of substance who was both bankable and well versed with the art of acting and film making.

Alongwith acting, Clint Eastwood took to producing and directing films as well and after his incredible movie ‘The Escape from Alcatraz’, came up some of his best work, particularly post 1990. His film the ‘Million Dollar Baby’ featuring Hillary Swank and Morgan Freeman won four Oscar awards. As age began to catch up with Clint, instead of slowing down he kept on directing films after films which not only won critical acclaim but also had extremely successful box office runs. ‘ In the Line of Fire ‘, ‘ Changeling’, ‘Gran Torino’ , ‘American Sniper’ and the extraordinary ‘ Invictus’ are some of the films which come to mind.

The actor, director par excellence

Clint Eastwood has defied age and in my opinion done his best work after reaching the 70 year mark. He did not allow his passion to defuse or his energies to dwindle and infact accelerated his pace of work. The public appreciation and the consequent success just had to happen,  such was his impeccable surrender to his craft. Even at the age of 88, Clint Eastwood acted as the hero in the 2018 film ‘The Mule’, and it would be fair to say he was charismatic and carried the film beautifully on his shoulders. His latest directorial venture ‘Cry Macho’ released in September 2021. And just to add Clint Eastwood served as the Mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California for two years from 1986. Truly a man of several genres.

His ever thinking mind, a zeal to keep doing what he has loved , years and years of uncompromising fitness regimens and a penchant for discipline and meditation are the major contributors to Clint’s longevity. His life is without doubt a boundless lesson for all to seek inspiration from.

So keep going Clint Eastwood, you don’t need to rest, the Almighty still wants you here.
