A Tragedy For Owono
The death of Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel has shaken Spanish football. In the middle of the grief is a 25-year-old goalkeeper who has been left shattered by what happened.
The Man At The Centre
Jesús Owono is a goalkeeper for FC Andorra and an Equatorial Guinea international. He was sent off after the collision, and the match was suspended.
Breaking His Silence
Owono spoke through a statement released by FC Andorra on Wednesday. He said these are the hardest days of his life, that he can’t think of anything but Jesús and the pain everyone is feeling, and ended by wishing De Miguel to rest in peace. He also sent a message of support to De Miguel’s family.
Support From Within Football
He has received messages of support from his teammates and from the Equatorial Guinea football federation. His club has asked for the greatest sensitivity and respect for him.
The Cost of Social Media
Owono reportedly had to close his Instagram account after the flood of comments. A viral apology attributed to him was also false, according to FC Andorra. The only words from Owono that can be trusted are those released through his club.
What Comes Next
Spanish media say the RFEF’s competition committee may decide on a sanction. No decision has been announced.
A Moment For Compassion
Football is a physical game, and nobody walks onto the pitch expecting a night like this. Jesús de Miguel’s family, friends and teammates are the ones suffering the greatest loss, and they come first in everyone’s thoughts. But Owono is also carrying a burden no player should have to carry alone. He deserves space, support and kindness.
Our thoughts are with all those affected.
