Quarterback movement is hard to predict, and most of this list rests on contract situations and offseason outlooks written earlier this year. Results since then may have changed the picture, so treat these as candidates, not forecasts. Here are 10 quarterbacks whose situations could lead to a new team in 2027.
The Headliners
- Baker Mayfield (Buccaneers). He is on an expiring contract and tops several early free-agent rankings, but Tampa Bay can use the franchise tag, so a move is far from certain.
- Kyler Murray (Vikings). He is also on an expiring deal. ESPN’s outlook says Minnesota will push hard to re-sign him, so his path depends on how this season goes.
- Daniel Jones (Colts). Analysts see him as a bridge or reclamation option in 2027 free agency, although his ceiling is described as limited.
- Aaron Rodgers (Steelers). Contract trackers list him as a 2027 free agent, and he turns 43 in December, so retirement is as likely as a new team.
- Justin Fields (Chiefs). He is listed as an unrestricted free agent after the season and could look for a starting job elsewhere.
The Longer Shots
- Tua Tagovailoa (Falcons). Yahoo notes that Atlanta would not hesitate to turn to Michael Penix Jr. if the season spirals.
- Geno Smith (Jets). He turns 36 this fall, and New York has three first-round picks in 2027, which could push him toward a backup role.
- Anthony Richardson. Contract trackers list him as a 2027 free agent after an up-and-down start to his career.
- Will Levis (Titans). He is also due to hit free agency in 2027 and is among the young quarterbacks who need a fresh start.
- Marcus Mariota (Commanders). The veteran is listed as a 2027 free agent on a smaller contract.
Who Is Not Moving
Most outlooks treat Matthew Stafford as an exception. ESPN says his extension ties him to the Rams through 2027, and Sam Darnold is also signed through 2027 in Seattle. Good quarterbacks rarely hit the open market, which is why this list is short on stars. See our look at Caleb Williams and the Bears for a young quarterback who is not going anywhere.
