Football Fans Crown the Greatest Ballon d’Or Season Ever

Cristiano Ronaldo, the Ballon d’Or of All Time

The GOAT debate never ends. But this October, football got a fresh way to settle part of it. To mark the Ballon d’Or’s 70th anniversary, France Football gathered the 32 winning seasons of the ten players who have won the award at least twice, and let fans pick the best one. The result:

A Landslide

This wasn’t close. Ronaldo’s 2008 win, from his Manchester United days, topped the poll, and early reports had it holding 62% of the ballots, with Messi’s best season, 2012, a distant second at 13%. Most other winning years, including Ronaldo’s own later ones, sat around 1%.

Fans weren’t choosing between players. They were choosing between individual seasons. And the season they picked was the one that made Ronaldo a global superstar.

Why 2008?

Ronaldo was 23, and he delivered one of the most complete seasons a forward has ever had. He scored 42 goals for United, including 31 in the Premier League, and topped the Champions League scoring charts. The year ended with a league and Champions League double, and the Ballon d’Or followed.

It was also Ronaldo at his most explosive: the pace, the step-overs, the long-range strikes and the aerial power, all combined with fierce competitiveness. He later became a more efficient finisher, but 2008 was the peak of the complete package.

The Bigger Picture

The vote fits a career that has refused to fade. At 41, Ronaldo is still scoring and has reached 981 career goals. He has five Ballon d’Ors, Champions League glory with two clubs, and a Euro title with Portugal.

The Fine Print

It’s fair to keep this in perspective. Organisers stressed that BOAT is a fan-driven celebration, not an official new trophy, and it shouldn’t be confused with the Super Ballon d’Or France Football presented in 1989. Voting also cost €1 per vote, so passionate fanbases could vote often. Messi still has eight Ballon d’Ors to Ronaldo’s five, and Cruyff, Platini and others have their own devotees.

Verdict

Call it a fan poll, call it a celebration, or call it a PR win. The BOAT title still says something real. Of all the brilliant seasons in Ballon d’Or history, the one people remember most is a 23-year-old in a red shirt who seemed unstoppable.
