Hirayasumi

A Gentle Slice of Life Worth Waiting For

Hirayasumi is set to premiere in January 2027. It is an anime adaptation of Keigo Shinzo’s award-winning manga. The story is not about heroes, monsters, or grand battles. It is about ordinary people living quiet lives. That alone makes it stand out. In a season often filled with action and fantasy, Hirayasumi offers something calm and human.

What Is Hirayasumi About?

The main character is Hiroko Ikuta, a 29-year-old freelance worker. He deals with money problems, anxiety, and disappointment. But he chooses to face life with a positive attitude. He is not good at talking to women his own age, but older women like him. One elderly woman, known as Granny, invites him over for tonkatsu dinners twice a week.

When Granny dies, Hiroko inherits her house. Soon after, his 18-year-old cousin Natsumi Kobayashi moves in with him. Natsumi is an art student. The two begin living together in a quiet neighbourhood. Not much happens in terms of plot. That is the point. The show is about everyday moments, small joys, and quiet connections.

A True Iyashikei Series

Hirayasumi is a pure iyashikei anime. That means it is designed to be soothing and pleasing. It has light humour, but it is not a comedy. It touches on grief, but it is not a heavy drama. It is content to just be nice. In a world that often feels mean, that kindness can be enough. The first episode was shown at a preview screening at the Japan Society. Even though it was still having finishing touches added, it looked and sounded nearly complete.

Beautiful Animation and Music

The animation is handled by Production +h. The team has to finish the rest of the season before January, but the preview suggested it will be one of the better-looking shows of Winter 2027. The anime captures the soft line work and rounded designs of the manga. The watercolour backgrounds from the cover art also translate well to animation.

The music is composed by Kaori Sawada. She wrote the score without seeing the animation. She submitted pieces without knowing exactly where they would be used. Her goal was to complement the story rather than override it. The music stays relaxed and subtle. Some of her more comical music in the tonkatsu scene leads into a more serious funeral scene, blending lightness and heaviness.

What the Creators Say

Anime producer Junichi Katsutani said the team wanted to protect and respect the gentle touch of Shinzo’s manga. Character designers Naoyuki Asano and Mika Nishimura took their time and paid attention to small details. Junya Okamoto from Shogakukan said the show is a slightly different kind of anime. He said there are no ogres and no monsters.

Hirayasumi is an everyday story about a local residential area. He thinks it may be the first time such a low-key manga has been animated. Fans of iyashikei might debate that, but it is certainly rare. Keigo Shinzo has had live-action adaptations before. The anime was announced before the live-action drama, but the live-action one aired first.

Why You Should Watch

If you want something peaceful, Hirayasumi is for you. It is not trying to shock you or make you cry. It is trying to make you feel calm. It is about a man who chooses positivity. It is about a cousin who moves in. It is about tonkatsu dinners and small moments. It is about life. After a long day, that might be exactly what you need. Hirayasumi promises a cute slice of ordinary life. And sometimes, ordinary is more than enough.
