Kimi Antonelli leads the 2026 F1 standings by 84 points with seven rounds remaining. Here are his rivals, title permutations, and earliest championship scenarios.
Kimi Antonelli is seven rounds away from potentially becoming the 2026 Formula 1 World Champion, and his position at the top of the standings has become increasingly difficult for his rivals to challenge. The Mercedes driver has 320 points after 16 Grands Prix, giving him an 84-point advantage over teammate George Russell. Antonelli’s latest points haul came from a second-place finish at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia on October 4, while Russell retired from the race after a power-unit problem. The result gave Antonelli his biggest championship lead of the season with seven rounds remaining.

What Does the 2026 F1 Championship Standings Look Like?
| Position | Driver | Team | Points | Gap to Antonelli |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kimi Antonelli | Mercedes | 320 | – |
| 2 | George Russell | Mercedes | 236 | 84 |
| 3 | Lewis Hamilton | Ferrari | 214 | 106 |
| 4 | Charles Leclerc | Ferrari | 191 | 129 |
| 5 | Lando Norris | McLaren | 188 | 132 |
| 6 | Max Verstappen | Red Bull Racing | 188 | 132 |
Five drivers besides Antonelli remain mathematically capable of winning the championship: Russell, Hamilton, Leclerc, Norris, and Verstappen. However, the size of Antonelli’s advantage means Russell is comfortably the closest challenger. Antonelli has also produced the strongest season of his Formula 1 career so far. Through 16 Grands Prix, he has eight wins and 13 podiums, alongside 26 points from five Sprint races.

How Many Points Are Still Available?
Seven rounds remain on the 2026 calendar, beginning with the Singapore Grand Prix on October 11. Singapore is the only remaining Sprint weekend, meaning there are 183 points still available in total.
| Remaining round | Date | Sprint? |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore | October 11 | Yes |
| United States | October 25 | No |
| Mexico | November 1 | No |
| Brazil | November 8 | No |
| Las Vegas | November 21 | No |
| Qatar | November 28 | No |
| Abu Dhabi | December 6 | No |
A driver can score a maximum of 183 points by winning all seven Grands Prix and the Singapore Sprint. That means Russell can still theoretically overturn an 84-point deficit. The same applies mathematically to the other four challengers, although their margins for error are considerably smaller because they start further behind.
When Can Kimi Antonelli Win the 2026 F1 Championship?
The earliest possible championship victory for Antonelli is the United States Grand Prix in Austin, which is Round 18 of the season. For that to happen, Antonelli needs to gain at least 16 points on Russell during the Singapore weekend. That would increase his current 84-point advantage to 100 points.
Antonelli could then clinch the championship in Austin if he wins the Grand Prix and Russell scores no points. The exact way Antonelli builds that 16-point advantage in Singapore can vary because the weekend includes both a Sprint and the Grand Prix. There is another important scenario. Formula 1’s own points analysis projects that, if Antonelli and Russell continue producing results around their current median finishing positions, Antonelli could instead secure the championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix, Round 19.
Can George Russell Still Beat Kimi Antonelli?
Mathematically, yes. Realistically, the task is becoming much harder. Russell has 236 points and can score a maximum of 183 more, giving him a theoretical ceiling of 419. That means Antonelli cannot afford to assume the championship is already decided. However, Russell’s recent retirement has made his challenge more difficult. He is also expected to start the Singapore weekend from the back of the grid after Mercedes used a new power unit following his Malaysia failure.
Hamilton, Leclerc, Norris, and Verstappen remain mathematically alive as well, but each needs Antonelli to score significantly fewer points while producing a huge run of results of their own. Formula 1’s official analysis describes the title chances of the lower-ranked challengers as slim.
What Does Antonelli Need to Do From Here?
Antonelli does not need to dominate every remaining race to become champion. His biggest advantage is the points buffer he has already built. The immediate target is Singapore. A strong weekend there could put him within one race of the title, while another large gain over Russell would make the championship picture even more straightforward.
The schedule then moves to Austin on October 25, followed by Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi. For now, Antonelli is not yet the champion, but he controls the championship. The earliest he can officially seal the title is Austin, and a more conservative projection based on current performance points to Mexico. Can Kimi Antonelli finish the job in Austin, or will George Russell keep the championship battle alive into Mexico?
