A Strong Campaign in Aichi-Nagoya
India completed the Asian Games 2026 in fourth place with a total of 85 medals. The final tally included 21 gold, 27 silver, and 37 bronze. Team Sports Deliver Gold
The final days of the Games gave India several important gold medals. The men’s hockey team defended its title with a 5-1 win over Malaysia. Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored twice in the final. Jugraj Singh, Hardik Singh, and Shilanand Lakra also scored.
Harmanpreet finished as the tournament’s top scorer with 12 goals. This was India’s fifth Asian Games men’s hockey gold. India also became only the second country after Pakistan to successfully defend the men’s hockey title. Harmanpreet became the first Indian men’s hockey captain to lead the team to two Asian Games gold medals.
A day earlier, the Indian women’s hockey team ended a 44-year wait for the Asian Games title. They beat defending champions China 1-0. It was the first time both Indian hockey teams won gold at the same edition of the Games.
India also retained its men’s T20 cricket title. They defeated Pakistan by 19 runs in the final. Abhishek Sharma scored a quick 61 off 28 balls. Tilak Varma made an unbeaten 51 off 22 balls. India posted 211 for six. Pakistan fought back through Hasan Nawaz, who scored 96 off 51 balls, but they finished at 192 for six.
Historic Firsts for Indian Athletes
Several Indian athletes created history at the Games. Pranavi Urs became the first Indian woman to win an individual Asian Games gold medal in golf. She finished at 15-under 265 and edged China’s Yin Ruoning by one stroke. Her performance also helped India win silver in the women’s team event alongside Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar.
Teenager Kumkum Anil Mohod became the first Indian woman to win an individual Asian Games recurve gold medal. She held her nerve in a shoot-off against South Korea’s Oh Yejin and found the 10-ring with her final arrow. Kumkum was also part of the Indian women’s recurve team that won gold alongside Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma. This was India’s first women’s team recurve title at the Games. Her individual victory also secured an Olympic quota place for India for Los Angeles 2028.
Neeru Dhanda opened India’s gold-medal account in the women’s trap event. Kamaljeet and Suruchi Singh matched Asian records while winning gold in the mixed team 10m air pistol event.
Wrestling and Boxing Success
In wrestling, Aman Sehrawat upgraded his bronze from Hangzhou to gold. He defeated reigning world champion Chong Song Han of North Korea 10-7 in the men’s 57kg final. Sujeet Kalkal also won gold. Antim Panghal took silver in the women’s 53kg category. Deepak Punia secured bronze in the men’s 97kg event.
