Key Details of the Appeal

Official Confirmation

Manchester City confirmed that they officially lodged their appeal before the deadline.

Club Statement

In an official statement, the club maintained its innocence, asserting that the independent commission’s findings contain “clear material errors of law, principle and fact” and that “a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists in support of all of its positions”.

Background Findings

The appeal follows the Premier League commission’s ruling finding the club guilty on 114 out of 115 charges. The charges span nine seasons (2009–2018) and involve failure to provide accurate financial information, hidden player/manager payments, and non-cooperation with the investigation.

Sanctions To Be Put On Hold

Because the appeal has been formally submitted, potential sanctions—which could range from significant fines and points deductions to expulsion—remain put on hold pending the outcome of the appeal panel’s hearing.

Appeal Board

A three-person panel (including a judicial office holder) will be appointed. The Chair of the Premier League’s Judicial Panel, Sir Gary Hickinbottom, is tasked with appointing the independent three-person Appeal Board.

Lord Pannick KC Might Lead City’s Defence

While not officially confirmed for the appeal stage yet, Lord Pannick KC has famously led Manchester City’s high-profile legal defence against the Premier League since charges were first brought in 2023. Legal commentators widely expect him and his team at Blackstone Chambers to remain at the helm of City’s defence.

Hearing Timeline

Under regulations, the appeal hearing should occur within 12 weeks and last no longer than five consecutive days.
