The Magpies To Refurbish The Badge Since 1988
Newcastle United initiated an official process to update their club crest for the first time since 1988. The Magpies’ current badge, in place for 38 years, is being refurbished to perform better on digital screens, broadcast graphics, merchandise, and small mobile formats, where its intricate details and fine lines often lose clarity.

Key Details Behind the Crest Evolution
The Reason for Change: The club’s 1988 crest features intricate details derived from Newcastle upon Tyne’s historic coat of arms (such as the two seahorses, castle keep, and blue scroll). In digital environments, these elements blur and become hard to reproduce clearly at small scales.
Fan Consultation & Survey: Newcastle engaged in extensive consultations with season-ticket holders, fan advisory groups, and international supporter bases. 84% of supporters voted in favor of updating the existing crest (“Refine & Revive”) rather than creating a completely new design.
What Will Be Preserved: The club committed to protecting its historical identity:
The Castle Keep (identified by fans as the most essential element).
The Seahorses (representing the city’s maritime history).
The Black-and-White Striped Shield
The Blue Name Banderole/Ribbon
No generic roundel: The club confirmed they will not adopt a standardised circular badge.

A Badge For The Future
I have been a follower of Newcastle United since the time of Alan Shearer. The Magpies have been a force in English Club Football. The badge holds huge significance for the players and the fans. Hopefully, the refurbished badge takes Newcastle’s history and football forward.
