Mathis Albert has rapidly risen from the LA Galaxy academy to Borussia Dortmund and the USMNT. Here is how the 17-year-old became one of America’s players to watch.

Mathis Albert’s rise has accelerated sharply in 2026. The 17-year-old Borussia Dortmund winger made his Bundesliga debut in April, earned his first United States senior cap in September and, three days later, scored against Chile to become the youngest goalscorer in USMNT history. Albert’s latest milestone came on September 29, when he came off the bench in the United States’ 4-2 win over Chile and scored in the third minute of stoppage time. At 17 years and 131 days, he surpassed Christian Pulisic’s previous mark. The goal was the latest stage of a development path that began in the United States before taking Albert to Dortmund and, eventually, the senior international level.

From LA Galaxy To Borussia Dortmund

Born on May 21, 2009, in Greenville, South Carolina, Albert developed with the Carolina Elite Soccer Academy before joining the LA Galaxy academy. He was already playing senior football at 14, appearing for the Galaxy’s second team in a friendly against Nordsjaelland. Dortmund brought him to Germany in the summer of 2024. He initially progressed through the club’s U17 and U19 teams, quickly showing enough to move through the age groups. During the 2024-25 season, he scored seven goals in 23 appearances for Dortmund’s U19 side.

His development then brought him into the senior environment. Albert was included in Dortmund’s squad for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, becoming the youngest player in the tournament at 16, although he did not make an appearance. He subsequently trained with the first team during the 2025-26 campaign before making his Bundesliga debut. That debut came on April 26, 2026, when Albert replaced Maximilian Beier in the 88th minute of Dortmund’s 4-0 victory over Freiburg. At 16 years, 11 months and five days, he became the youngest American to play in the Bundesliga.

Mathis Albert’s International Breakthrough

The next major step arrived with the United States. Mauricio Pochettino called Albert into the senior squad for the September international window, and he made his debut against Peru on September 26. Introduced in the 61st minute with the score at 1-1, Albert immediately attacked down the left and won a penalty that Malik Tillman converted in the 4-1 victory.

Three days later came the bigger moment. Albert entered in the 71st minute against Chile, with the United States eventually winning 4-2. In stoppage time, Auston Trusty’s headed ball fell into Albert’s path, and the teenager finished over the line after his effort struck the crossbar. Goal-line technology confirmed the goal. The sequence gives his rise a much clearer shape: he joined Dortmund’s academy in 2024, entered the club’s senior picture in 2025, made his Bundesliga debut in April 2026, and reached the USMNT within five months.

What Makes Mathis Albert A Prospect To Watch?

Albert primarily operates on the wing and is particularly dangerous when carrying the ball at defenders. Bundesliga describes him as a fast, dribbling-focused attacker who likes to cut inside onto his right foot. His early senior appearances have also shown a willingness to make things happen immediately. Winning a penalty within minutes of his international debut against Peru was followed by a decisive goal against Chile.

Dortmund, meanwhile, has already shown that it sees a pathway for him. He is not yet an established Bundesliga starter, but the club has moved him through its youth structure, exposed him to first-team football, and included him around the senior squad. That distinction is important. Albert has made a spectacular start, but two senior international appearances and limited Bundesliga minutes are still a small sample. His next challenge is to turn those flashes into regular club football and sustained performances against experienced opponents. For now, his progress has put him firmly on the radar in both Germany and the United States. Could Mathis Albert become one of the next major American talents to emerge from Borussia Dortmund?
