Curry Confirms He Tried to Bring LeBron to Golden State
Stephen Curry has finally spoken about the Golden State Warriors’ attempt to sign LeBron James in free agency. The Warriors made a strong push to convince the four-time NBA champion to join forces with Curry, but the effort fell short. LeBron eventually signed with the Philadelphia 76ers. For weeks, there were rumours about Curry’s role in the recruitment. After all, Curry and LeBron have been the two biggest faces of the NBA for more than a decade. Now, Curry has broken his silence.
Curry Says Anyone Would Have Tried
Curry made it clear that he was actively involved in trying to recruit LeBron. He said that if anybody did not try to recruit him, they would be a fool. He added that it was a good time for the NBA to have a player of LeBron’s stature and notoriety in a position where he got to choose where he wanted to go. With those words, Curry confirmed his role in the process. At the same time, he made it clear that he fully respected LeBron’s decision as the league’s all-time leading scorer.
The Mission Was Always Difficult
The recruitment effort was always going to be an uphill battle. With Jimmy Butler sidelined by injury, Curry is currently the only All-Star-calibre player on the Warriors’ roster. Beyond Curry, Draymond Green was the only other figure with enough influence to try to sway LeBron. Green is one of LeBron’s closest friends in the league. In the end, neither Curry nor Green could convince LeBron that Golden State’s current roster had what it took to contend for another championship.

The Move LeBron Was Waiting For Never Came
Throughout free agency, reports indicated that LeBron was open to considering either the Warriors or the Cleveland Cavaliers. But he had one major condition: that one of the teams make a significant roster upgrade before he arrived. Golden State chose to keep its core intact and tried to recruit LeBron without making a blockbuster trade.
One of the most frequently mentioned names was Anthony Davis. He would have formed a star trio alongside Curry and LeBron while reuniting James with his former Los Angeles Lakers teammate. However, the Washington Wizards showed no interest in trading Davis before he even debuted with the franchise. That effectively shut the door on that possibility.
Philadelphia Made the Decisive Move
Meanwhile, the Philadelphia 76ers stunned the league by acquiring Jaylen Brown in exchange for Paul George. That move ultimately proved decisive in landing LeBron. Brown arrives after the best season of his career and represents exactly the kind of high-impact addition James was looking for on a true title contender. The 76ers gave LeBron the roster upgrade he wanted, while the Warriors did not. In the end, LeBron chose Philadelphia, and the Warriors were left to move forward with their existing core.
What This Means for the Warriors
The failed recruitment attempt leaves the Warriors in a difficult position. Curry remains one of the best players in the league, but he needs more help around him. With Butler injured and no major additions made, Golden State will have to rely on internal improvement and chemistry to compete in a tough Western Conference.
Curry’s comments show that he was willing to do whatever it took to bring LeBron to the Bay Area. But the front office’s decision not to make a blockbuster trade ultimately cost them their chance. For now, Curry and the Warriors will focus on the season ahead, knowing they gave their best effort to land one of the greatest players of all time.
