Pakistan vs Thailand Match Overview

Pakistan advanced to the semi-finals of the Women’s Asian Games cricket competition after a tense three-wicket win over Thailand in a rain-reduced match. The game was delayed by nearly two hours due to a wet outfield, and when play began, it was reduced to 11 overs per side. Pakistan were set a target of 92 runs to win. They achieved the target with a few balls to spare, but the match was far from straightforward.

Thailand’s Innings

Thailand won the toss and chose to bat. Pakistan opted to bowl first. Thailand scored 91 for 4 in their 11 overs. Nannapat Koncharoenkai was the standout performer for Thailand, scoring 49 runs off 38 balls. She hit several boundaries and was particularly strong after the sixth over. Pakistan’s captain Fatima Sana took two wickets for 22 runs, removing Natthakan Chantham early and then dismissing Koncharoenkai in the final over. Thailand’s captain Naruemol Chaiwai also contributed some useful runs, helping Thailand reach a competitive total on a tricky surface.

Pakistan’s Chase

Pakistan’s chase began well. Opener Shawaal Zulfiqar gave the team a fast start, hitting three fours and a six in the first three overs. However, Thailand fought back strongly. In the space of 14 balls, Pakistan lost four wickets for just 11 runs. Zulfiqar was caught off the bowling of Onnicha Kamchomphu, Ayesha Zafar fell for 1, Gull Feroza was stumped for 16, and Aliya Riaz was also dismissed off Kamchomphu’s bowling. Pakistan were suddenly 47 for 4 and needed 45 runs from the last 30 balls.

Fatima Sana’s Rescue Act

With Pakistan in trouble, captain Fatima Sana took charge. She went down on one knee and hit two fours and a six on the leg side. She was dropped by a diving fielder at long-off, and the ball went for four more. Eyman Fatima ended the over with another six, and Pakistan scored 25 runs from that over. The equation became 19 runs needed from 18 balls.

Sana was dismissed at the start of the next over, and Eyman Fatima also fell in the 10th over, leaving Pakistan needing 15 runs from 10 balls. Tuba Hassan then struck a six and a four off consecutive balls, bringing Pakistan within four runs of victory. Hassan was caught at fine leg at the end of the 10th over, but Eman Naseer and Umm-e-Hani kept their cool and took four singles off the next four balls to seal the win.

Key Performances

For Pakistan, Shawaal Zulfiqar top-scored with 25 runs. Fatima Sana’s quickfire hitting turned the game in Pakistan’s favour, and Tuba Hassan’s late boundaries proved crucial. Onnicha Kamchomphu was the best bowler for Thailand, taking 3 wickets for 37 runs. Thipatcha Chaturongrattana also bowled well, taking 2 wickets for 23 runs. For Thailand, Nannapat Koncharoenkai’s 49 was the highlight of their batting effort.

Next Step After Pakistan vs Thailand

Pakistan will now face the winner of the match between Malaysia and Sri Lanka in the semi-final on September 20. Pakistan are two-time gold medallists in the Asian Games and will be hoping to continue their campaign. Thailand, despite the loss, put up a strong fight and pushed Pakistan all the way. The Pakistan vs Thailand match was a reminder that in T20 cricket, no total is safe and no team can be taken lightly. Pakistan will need to improve their middle-order batting if they are to go all the way in the tournament.
