Discover the top five goal scorers in La Liga history, from Hugo Sánchez and Telmo Zarra to Cristiano Ronaldo and record-holder Lionel Messi.

La Liga has produced some of football’s greatest goalscorers, but even among generations of prolific forwards, five names stand above the rest. From Lionel Messi’s record-breaking years at Barcelona to Telmo Zarra’s dominance in an entirely different era, these players left behind scoring records that continue to define Spanish football. The current top five are Lionel Messi with 474 goals, Cristiano Ronaldo with 311, Telmo Zarra with 251, Karim Benzema with 238, and Hugo Sánchez with 234. What makes the list even more fascinating is that the five players reached those numbers in completely different ways and different eras of the competition.

Who are La Liga’s five greatest goalscorers?

5. Hugo Sánchez – 234 goals

Hugo Sánchez begins the list at fifth with 234 La Liga goals. The Mexican striker spent the majority of his Spanish career with Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid, becoming one of the most feared finishers of the 1980s and early 1990s.

His greatest spell came at Real Madrid, where his movement inside the penalty area and spectacular finishing made him a nightmare for defenders. Sánchez was especially famous for his acrobatic finishes, but his numbers were built on something much simpler: an extraordinary ability to arrive in the right place at the right time.

4. Karim Benzema – 238 goals

Four goals separate Benzema from Sánchez, but the Frenchman’s journey to 238 was very different. Benzema arrived at Real Madrid in 2009 and initially had to share the spotlight with Cristiano Ronaldo. Over time, however, he developed from a supporting forward into the centrepiece of Madrid’s attack.

His intelligence, link-up play, and ability to score from different positions helped him become one of the club’s most important forwards. By the time he left Spain in 2023, he had climbed to fourth on La Liga’s all-time scoring list with 238 goals.

3. Telmo Zarra – 251 goals

Before Messi and Ronaldo transformed modern scoring records, Telmo Zarra was the benchmark. The Athletic Club legend scored 251 La Liga goals and held the competition’s scoring record for almost six decades. Messi eventually surpassed him in 2014, but Zarra’s record remains one of the most remarkable achievements in Spanish football history. La Liga itself recognised Zarra’s 251-goal mark as the record Messi eventually broke.

Zarra’s place in the top three is particularly impressive because his entire career belonged to a very different era of football, long before the modern attacking systems and statistical advantages enjoyed by today’s elite forwards.

2. Cristiano Ronaldo – 311 goals

Cristiano Ronaldo sits comfortably in second place with 311 La Liga goals for Real Madrid. What makes his record even more remarkable is the rate at which he produced those goals. Ronaldo reached 311 in just 292 league appearances, giving him a scoring rate of more than a goal per game across his La Liga career.

His rivalry with Messi turned La Liga into the centre of the footballing world for much of the 2010s, with the two forwards constantly pushing each other to extraordinary numbers. Ronaldo eventually left Real Madrid in 2018, but his 311 goals remain enough to keep him second on the all-time list.

1. Lionel Messi – 474 goals

At the top is Lionel Messi, and there is a sizeable gap between him and everyone else. The Argentine scored 474 La Liga goals for Barcelona, finishing 163 goals ahead of Ronaldo. He became the competition’s all-time leading scorer after surpassing Zarra’s long-standing record and continued extending the mark before leaving Spain in 2021.

Messi’s record is not simply about longevity. His scoring peaked at an extraordinary level, including a 50-goal league season in 2011/12. La Liga notes that no other player had previously reached that mark in a single campaign. That combination of consistency, longevity, and incredible peak performance explains why Messi remains so far ahead at the top.

Five scorers, five different eras

The gap between Messi and Ronaldo at the top tells one story, while Zarra’s presence between two modern superstars tells another. Benzema and Sánchez complete a list that stretches across decades of Spanish football. Together, these five players show how the art of scoring in La Liga has evolved, from Zarra’s classic centre-forward dominance to Messi and Ronaldo redefining just how many goals an elite forward could produce.
