Napoli will therefore need to avoid turning the game into an end-to-end contest. Their best route may be to use the Maradona atmosphere, keep Arsenal’s midfielders occupied, and attack quickly when possession is recovered.

Why Are Arsenal Such a Difficult Opponent?

Arsenal’s strength is not just their attacking talent. Rasmus Hojlund provides another interesting option. His movement can pull centre-backs away from their preferred positions and create space for players arriving from midfield or the wings. But Arsenal will know exactly what Napoli are trying to do. Their priority will be to prevent De Bruyne from receiving the ball in dangerous central areas and force Napoli to build attacks from wider positions.

Can Napoli Turn the Maradona Into an Advantage?

The stadium could be Napoli’s biggest weapon. European nights in Naples can become emotionally charged, and an early spell of pressure could make Arsenal’s task considerably harder. There is also history between these clubs. Arsenal have won three of their four previous meetings, although Napoli won the first leg when the teams last met in the Champions League in 2013/14. Arsenal then won both legs of their 2019 Europa League quarter-final. That history means neither side will be unfamiliar with the other, but the teams have changed considerably since those encounters. Napoli needs a result that settles them after an inconsistent start. Arsenal want to begin another Champions League campaign with evidence that last season’s final appearance was not a one-off.
