The Transfer Window
Football transfer windows are designated periods set by FIFA and national football associations during which clubs are legally permitted to register new players. Formally referred to as “registration periods” in FIFA’s Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (RSTP), these windows dictate when money, contracts, and player movement can officially take place.
The Governing Rules
Pre-Season (Summer Window): The primary and longest window, running for up to 12 weeks during the close-season (typically mid-June to late August/early September in European calendar leagues). Clubs use this period to restructure their squads, spend large transfer budgets, and conduct full pre-season integrations.
Mid-Season (Winter/January Window): A shorter secondary window, lasting up to one month (typically running throughout January). It is primarily used for mid-season course corrections, replacement of injured players, or short-term emergency loans.
The Buying vs Selling Rule
A window only restricts the registration (buying) of players by clubs within that specific association. A club in an association whose window is closed can still sell or loan players out to a club located in a country where the transfer window remains open.

Key Exceptions
Free Agents: Players who are out of contract before the close of the transfer window can be signed by a club at any time during the season, provided the club has an open spot in its registered league squad.
Pre-Contracts (Bosman Rule): A player in the final six months of their contract can negotiate and sign a pre-contract agreement with a club in a different national association, moving for free once their contract expires on June 30.
The Deal Sheet: Domestic leagues like the English Premier League allow clubs to submit an authorised “Deal Sheet” in the final hours of Deadline Day. This grants an additional two-hour window past the official cutoff time to finalise contract details and medical documentation, provided a preliminary transfer agreement has already been executed.
