Aston Villa, the Europa League winners, suffered a massive 0-4 defeat at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium, home to the Seagulls, on Sunday night.
An Incredible Show From The Seagulls
Brighton, one of the Premier League’s biggest revelations in recent seasons and a dangerous team to visit, played an incredible match to pin down the Villans. By the 31st minute, the game was done and dusted. The Seagulls had smashed 4 already, and Aston Villa were staring at a painful defeat on Match Day 1 of the EPL 2026-27 season.
Young Hinshelwood’s Sensational Brace…
Jack Hinshelwood, the 21-year-old Seagull, struck twice in two minutes in a brilliant display of composed finishing and ball skills, to push Aston Villa to the ropes. Belgium’s De Cuyper had doubled the lead already after an own goal from Lindelof in the 8th minute.

Brighton produced a good thirty minutes of sublime attacking football to kill the game much before the long whistle. The Villans under Unai Emery had no clue as to what had hit them.
With A Depleted Attack, Aston Villa Suffered
A depleted side, already with the transfer of Morgan Rogers to Chelsea and Ollie Watkins pushing hard to reach Al-Hilal in the Saudi League, Aston Villa, with a fairly new-look attack, suffered. Watkins was not even on the bench as a frustrated Unai Emery witnessed the damage from the Seagulls.
Joao Gomes Was Red Carded Too
It was just too much for McGinn and Buendia to do as Brighton defended stoically to deny the Villans. Joao Gomes, on debut for Aston Villa, was red-carded, which further complicated issues for Aston Villa.
A lot to ponder for Unai Emery. But for the Seagulls, it was a brilliant start, and they appear to be in top flight.
