Jorge Jesus, the wily Portuguese, came to Al-Nassr, took the reins and won the elusive Roshn Saudi League for Cristiano Ronaldo and his team. A long, painful wait had come to an end. Jorge Jesus left immediately, creating a vacuum at the top.
A Crucial Decision To Make
It was a crucial decision for Al-Nassr to make. The Saudi League Crown had to be defended with full gusto, and hence a Manager who could repeat Jorge Jesus’ legacy was required.
Ange Postecoglou Was A Surprise
I was surprised that Al-Nassr went for Ange Postecoglou. Nothing against the former Tottenham Manager, but the exponent of ‘Angeball’, the high-pressing attacking style of play, had a forgetful last season.
He Had A Bad Previous Season
He was removed from Tottenham Hotspur ( after winning the Europa League) and then was sacked by Nottingham Forest in just over a month in charge. His stint at Nottingham was the shortest for any Manager in the history of the Club.
The Pressure Will Be Immense
With a troubled season just behind him, Postecoglou will be under real pressure to deliver at Al-Nassr. The Crown will have to be defended and not let go of easily by any stretch of imagination. The dominance of Al-Nassr will have to be maintained by Postecoglou.
‘Angeball’ Will Be Tested
His attacking style of play will surely suit the likes of Joao Felix, Sadio Mane, Kingsley Coman and Cristiano Ronaldo, but it will be a challenge to keep the defence strong, which Jorge Jesus was very successful with. Barring a string of 3-4 games last season in which Al-Nassr played loose football, the Knights of Najd were focused and showed great intent to win the Roshn Saudi League.
The Sucker Crown…
Postecoglou has been a Manager of great repute, and his credentials just cannot be doubted. In fact, the Al-Nassr test is a great opportunity for him to re-establish himself as one of the best Managers in the game. Just that he needs to be wary of the sucker Crown on his head.
…In The Saudi Heat
Al-Nassr will open the defence of their title on Saturday, August 15 at the Al-Awwal Park in Riyadh, against Al-Fateh, which will be Postecoglou’s first experience in the Saudi heat.
