Rashford – Barcelona Bonhomie Is Over

Marcus Rashford
Rashford Had Done Enough…

On loan from Manchester United to Barcelona, Marcus Rashford played his part to perfection. Scoring 14 goals and assisting another 14 in 49 games for the Catalan Club, the Englishman had helped Barcelona win La Liga and the Spanish Supercopa last season. Rashford thought he had done enough to stay at Barcelona, but that was not to be.

… But Barca Thought Otherwise

Barca had an option to make Rashford their own for about €30m, but decided against it, despite the 28-year-old’s performance last season. Rashford would thus return to Manchester United with a looming uncertainty as Michael Carrick prepares for a challenging upcoming season.

Arrival of Gordon & Adeyemi Left No Space For Rashford

Barcelona did have the purse for Rashford, but went ahead with Anthony Gordon from Newcastle for €70m, tightening the space for Rashford. With Raphina coming back to full fitness and Karim Adeyemi, the left winger signed from Borussia Dortmund, there was not much left for Marcus Rashford,  everyone thought.

With Julian Alvarez On the Radar, It Was Over For Rashford

What surprised me, however, was the fact that Robert Lewandowski had left Barcelona on a free transfer to Chicago Fire in the MLS and Marcus Rashford might have filled that space. But Barcelona decided otherwise with an eye on Julian Alvarez to fill Lewandowski’s boots.

Rashford May Have An Uncertain Future…

Marcus Rashford, despite a good showing last season and not a bad outing in the World Cup either, faces an uncertain future as Manchester United take on new entrants Hull City in their first match of the EPL on August 22.

… But He May Just Turn Out To Be Carrick’s Talisman

Michael Carrick, though, has given positive signs on Rashford’s arrival at Old Trafford. It could just be a blessing in disguise for Carrick if Rashford is meticulously used. Manchester United might just have received a lucky omen.
