WC Day 16: France Look Mighty Scary

Ousmane Dembele powers France past Norway

The Group I Has Been Rechristened

Group I was referred to as the Group of Death before the World Cup got underway. However, as the Group stage is coming to a close, France have rechristened the Group as the ‘Group of French Scare’, by devouring Senegal, Iraq and Norway without breaking a sweat.

An Unexpectedly Timid Norway

I was expecting the Norway encounter to be a close one, but the brave Vikings played out a timid vibe before the match as if they had already surrendered to the French. It was unusual from the Norwegians. They even rested Erling Haaland, which in my opinion, was yet another timid move.

France Were Not Letting Their Guard Down

France, however, hardly cared and played their finest on the pitch. They had taken the match seriously and had no plans of letting their guard down.

Majestic Dembele…

Ousmane Dembele was majestic if there was any word to describe his performance at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough last evening. He churned out three gems one after the other to score a hat trick to remember, and that, too, in a World Cup, has placed him amongst the very best to have represented France.

… And His Three Exquisite Gems

All three left-footers were clean hits, with two almost from beyond the box. The power, placement and precision of the three strikes were testimony to the quality and skill of Dembele. After just 32 minutes in the game, the score read 3-1. The match was virtually over by that time. Desire Doue added a fourth in stoppage time to complete the formalities.

Ruthlessly Dominant

The French were ruthlessly dominant, dismissing Senegal, Iraq and Norway with disdain. With Kylian Mbappe, Dembele, Olise, Desire Doue and Bradley Barcola in the mix, how long could one keep France at bay?

The Scare Is Real; Sweden Beware

The ‘Scare’ is real, with another Nordic Team, Sweden, to take up the cudgels with France in the Round of 32 at MetLife Stadium on Wednesday, July 1 at 2.30 am IST.

No guessing who stands tall to win it.
