WC Day 9 : Turkiye Eliminated

Paraguayan team celebrating win as Turkish players show disappointment on field
A Major Setback

In a major setback to a proud footballing nation, Turkiye were eliminated from the World Cup after losing their Group D match to Paraguay in Santa Clara an hour ago, their second loss of the tournament.

Turkiye Officially Eliminated

The Turkish side had lost to Australia last week by two goals to nil, and even if Turkiye beat the USA in their final game of the group, their head-to-head loss to Australia will confine them to the bottom of the table and hence have been officially eliminated.

Galarza Scores The Fastest Goal of The World Cup

Matias Galarza scored the fastest goal of the World Cup by putting the ball in the Turkish net just after 64 seconds of the match, and then Paraguay defended in an incredible show of gritty defiance.

Turkiye Attacked But Could Not Score

Turkiye attacked and attacked. Held 80℅ possession, had 33 shots of which 6 were on target and had 12 corners to boot. But the elusive goal just never arrived.

Brave Paraguay Denied Turkiye

Paraguay lost Almiron to a red card at the stroke of halftime but still denied Turkiye. The match was a mirror image of the contest between Australia and Turkiye, where the Turks, despite dominating play, could not score.

The Turks Remained Goalless In Both Games They Played

In both the matches taken together, Turkiye had more than 60 shots, of which 13 were on target and had secured 20 corners, but remained goalless.

One of the favourites to qualify from the Group, Turkiye Going Home

Turkiye were one of the favourites to qualify from the group, but unfortunately will be heading home after their last group game against the USA on Friday.

An Incredible Display From Paraguay

The Paraguayans are certain to qualify for the round of 32 and deserve every bit of it. Their defensive organisation was impeccable as they blocked all open spaces. They allowed Turkiye to have the ball, but denied them scoring opportunities. They hung on bravely, putting their bodies on the line, despite playing half the match with 10-men.

It Was Not To Be For Arda Guler

The forwards of Turkiye were a huge disappointment. It was a World Cup to forget for Turkiye’s Arda Guler. A lot was expected of him, but the young man just couldn’t deliver. This will hurt for sure.
