All Roads Lead To Roland Garros
All roads will lead to 2 Avenue Gordon Bennett, 75016, Paris, tomorrow, as Tennis lovers will throng the Roland Garros, the home of the French Open. The second grand slam of the year begins in less than 24 hours.
The Unforgiving Red Clay…
The Centre Court at Roland Garros, named Philippe Chatrier, has an inscription ” Victory is for the most tenacious “. This phrase is one that fills players with motivation. They strive to go the extra mile, burn their sweat and blood, and push themselves beyond physical and mental limits to win on the unforgiving Red Clay.
… Makes French Open The Toughest Slam
The French Open is arguably the toughest of all the 4 slams. The ball grips the Red Clay and slows down a tad. The rallies thus become longer, and the stamina is tested to the fullest, as that one extra ball has to be played each point. Baseline duels are scorching, and the drop shots, a strong weapon in the repertoire. The hamstrings and calves are under severe stress, but that one phrase makes it bear it all.
Many A Battle Have Been Fought
I have seen many battles fought on the Red Clay, from the Mats Wilanders, to the Thomas Musters, to the Ivan Lendls, to the Novaks. From the Chris Everts to the Steffi Grafs and of course the greatest of them all, Rafael Nadal, who ruled Roland Garros 14 times over. Last year’s battle between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner was an epic which only raised the game to simmering heights. No wonder the inspiring phrase was at the centre of it all.
Sinner Has The Aces Up His Sleeve This Year
The battles are returning to the Red Clay for another exciting fortnight. With Alcaraz injured, Sinner holds all the aces, and with the Italian in an irrepressible mood, he is the favourite for the title. Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev, in the same draw, will have to fight it out to stake a claim to fight Sinner if the Champion comes through his draw.
Sabalenka Leads The Race In The Women’s Draw
In the Women’s Singles, Sabalenka, Rybakina, the defending Champion Coco Gauff, and the Italian Open winner Svitolina are amongst the favourites to take the crown.
The Cauldron is Lighted
The Cauldron of Roland Garros is lighted, the Warriors have arrived. The Games begin tomorrow.
