Tension surged in the Real Madrid camp as the Los Blancos surprisingly went down to Mallorca, who were struggling to stay away from the relegation zone, in the La Liga. An expectedly easy march turned topsy-turvy as Real came short.
The defeat has certainly put Manager Arbeloa under severe pressure, with Club President Florentino Pérez voicing his displeasure over the loss. Before the International break, Real Madrid were looking good with crucial victories over Manchester City in the Champions League and in La Liga too, but a listless performance against Mallorca has once again reignited concerns for Los Blancos.
With Barcelona getting past Atletico Madrid, the Catalans have opened up a 7-point lead over Real Madrid in La Liga with just 8 games to go. All is not lost yet, but the lead is widening and may become insurmountable if Real do not improve urgently.
The UEFA Champions League Quarter Final 1st leg will be held tonight at the Bernabeu, with Bayern Munich in red-hot form scheduled to pay a visit. One of the most talked about clashes of the season, Bayern will not be easy for Real Madrid, even though Real at the Bernabeu are extremely tough opponents.
Harry Kane has joined the Bayern squad after injury and may feature in the contest. His presence will give a tremendous boost to the visitors and the kind of football the Germans are playing; for me, they certainly are the favourites against Arbeloa’s side.
UEFA Champions League, however, historically has witnessed Real Madrid perform exceptionally well, and Florentino Pérez would be hoping for a repeat of this history. Otherwise, Arbeloa might be in trouble.
