The Democratic Republic of Congo defeated Jamaica by a solitary goal in the Intercontinental Playoff Final to advance to the FIFA World Cup in North America in June. This would be Congo’s second essay at the World Cup after their maiden participation as Zaire in the 1974 World Cup.
The match played yesterday at the Akron Stadium in Zapopan, Mexico was dominated by Congo, but the Africans failed to score in regulation time.
As the match threatened to slip into a tie-breaker, former Manchester United and presently playing for Burnley in the English Premier League, Axel Tuanzebe scored for Congo in the first half of extra time from a curling corner kick, to settle the issue in Congo’s favour.
There were a few nervy moments as the goal was checked for a possible handball, but eventually VAR ruled in favour of Congo.
Congo will be placed alongside Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan in the World Cup and will be the 10th team from Africa to make it to Football’s showpiece event.
