It was a debut to remember for Karim Benzema, who left Al-Ittihad midway this season to join Al-Hilal in an unprecedented move. The former Real Madrid great and a Ballon d’Or winner had a great stint with Al-Ittihad, leading them to the Saudi Pro League title last season.
Al-Hilal, unbeaten this season in the RSL, winning 15 games and drawing 5, were looking to bolster their scoring abilities and in a smart move, got Karim Benzema to their side on a 1.5 year contract. Many had doubts about the transfer, with Benzema in the twilight of his career, but the Frenchman laid all the doubts to rest with a terrific performance.
Al-Hilal travelled to Najran and were hosted by Al-Akhdoud at the Prince Hathloul Sports City Stadium on Thursday night.
The Blue Waves were in their whites and clear favourites to win the night. The goal-scoring spree opened in the 31st minute with a spectacular heel from Benzema. At halftime, the scoreline read 1-0, but as the match progressed into the second half, Al-Akhdoud’s resistance collapsed.
The Simone Inzaghi managed outfit produced 5 goals in 30 minutes to dismantle Al-Akhdoud. Benzema accounted for two of them to get to his hat trick of hat tricks in the RSL. Malcolm got one, and captain Al-Dawsari got a brace to complete a 6-0 rout of the hosts.
The goals were a testament to Inzaghi’s team play, superb coordination and selfless moves. Benzema displayed great touch and effortless finishing skills. Malcolm too showcased his tremendous speed and ability with the ball. Al-Dawsari, Hernandez and Koulibaly too had a great match.
Al-Hilal look good to go all the way, though they have Al-Nassr and Al-Ahli Saudi breathing down their neck.
Karim Benzema yet again has found his mojo. What a player!!!.
