The King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah hosted one of the biggest names in club football in the world, as well as the most fierce rivals in the history of the sport. FC Barcelona and Real Madrid clashed in the Finals of the Spanish Super Cup last night.
The world had its eyes on Jeddah, attracting huge interest due to the blockbuster contest. And though the match was held outside Spain, the stadium was packed to the rafters, as a crazy night of football ensued in the Saudi Arabian Desert.
The first half was absolutely action-packed as both teams played some brilliant, pacy football. Lamine Yamal, Barca’s wonderkid, set up Brazilian star Raphina with an incredible pass, but the striker pushed the ball wide of the post. However, Raphina did not repeat the mistake as he finished a terrific move with his spectacular left foot in the 36th minute.
Real Madrid, stung by the goal pressed hard for an equaliser. Vinicius Jr produced a sensational piece of solo effort to score in the first half stoppage time. It was a goal worth going miles to watch. Real Madrid had equalised.
Barcelona, however, did not waste much time in getting ahead, with a classy tap over the head of Courtois by the Polish legend Lewandowski to once again put Barcelona in front. The goal was pure skill from the great pole.
But the indomitable men from Madrid were not budging as Garcia scored for Real two minutes later to once again bring the match to an even keel, at the stroke of halftime.
The second half was a bit scrappy to start with, but the Catalans got into a good rhythm in the last quarter and scored. Raphina once again rose to the occasion and scored the crucial goal in the 73rd minute ( through an Asencio deflection) in another incredible effort.
Real Madrid went for the equaliser again but Barcelona stood firm and denied the Los Blancos. Joan Garcia, Barca’s goalkeeper, was brilliant in goal and played a decisive role in keeping Madrid at bay.
Frenkie de Jong was red-carded late in the match for a heavy tackle on Kylian Mbappe, being the only blemish in a flawless Barca performance. The Hansi Flick-managed side continued their dominance over Los Blancos, registering their fifth win in their last six meetings.
It was indeed a night to remember as a relentless Barcelona lifted their second successive Spanish Super Cup.
