Morocco, the Atlas Lions and the hosts took a big leap towards the AFCON title with an assured win over a dangerous Cameroon at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat last night. No wonder the stadium was drenched in Red and Green as the favourites gave ample reason for the fans to celebrate.
Brahim Diaz, the Spanish-born Moroccan and Real Madrid midfielder, has been the player of the tournament so far, scoring 4 goals in 4 matches for the hosts. His attacking mindset, skilful play and the ability to score proved crucial yet again for Morocco. The 26-year-old, along with El Kaabi, made things difficult for Cameroon’s defence, and in the end, all the effort resulted in a set-piece goal by a Brahim deflection in the 26th minute.
Brahim Diaz had scored 5 goals in 5 matches, an excellent return for a fine player. Cameroon held most of the possession in the game but were unable to make any significant moves in the match. Mbeumo and Kofane their best bets to score, were rather quiet and, to be honest, ineffective. Cameroon could not get a single shot on target right through the match.
Morocco looked the better side, and in the 74th minute, Ismael Saibari, the 24-year-old talented PSV winger, scored with a tremendous finish to give Morocco a two-goal cushion.
Morocco defended bravely under Achraf Hakimi to deny Cameroon and wrap up the match. It was indeed a clinical and uplifting performance from Morocco.
Walid Regragui, Morocco’s Manager, was a happy man.
