The Emiratis delivered a knock-out punch to the Foxes from Algeria to reach the semi-finals of the Arab Cup, in a major upset, in a thrilling clash at the Al-Bayt Stadium in Qatar.
The Desert Warriors and the defending champions, Algeria, were the favourites to go through, but a determined UAE side upset Algeria’s applecart.
Adil Boulbina scored from a rebound and got Algeria ahead in the 46th minute, but the UAE were impressive with the energetic Bruno Oliveira, striking in the 64th minute to square up the match.
Algeria tried their best to score, but the UAE exhibited stoic defence and denied Algeria, pushing the match into extra time and then onto penalties to decide the tie.
It was a matter of who blinked first. The defending Champions missed, and the UAE held their nerves to win the tie-break 7-6. The Emiratis moved to the Semi-Finals, and the Desert Foxes were left high and dry.
