Hard Hitting Robin Smith, Dies.

Robin Smith Dies

The square-cut is one of the most attractive strokes in cricket, played by wristy players gifted with elegance, a great eye and loads of timing. Over several years of watching cricket, I can say with irrefutable confidence that I have seen three batsmen who no one can match when it comes to the square cut. Ashok Malhotra of India, Andrew Hudson of South Africa and Robin Smith, the South African, who played for England.

Amongst the three mentioned above, Robin Smith was the most destructive of square-cutters. He had brute power with which he launched into the cut, sending the ball to the fence in the blink of an eye.

Robin Smith, unable to play for South Africa due to the sanctions against apartheid, was allowed to play for England due to his English parents. made his debut on the 21st of July 1988 against the West Indies.

He performed consistently for England in his 8-year tenure with the Test team, playing 62 matches, scoring 4236 runs at a very fine average of 43.67 with 9 hundreds and 28 fifties. Smith played 71 ODIs too and performed decently as well.

Robin Smith was a terrific talent and entertained cricket fans with his belligerent style of play. The strongly built Smith, nicknamed Judge for his long hair and judicious looks, passed away on the 1st of December in Perth, Australia.

Post his exit from cricket, Smith moved to Australia to pursue an alternate career and unfortunately breathed his last after fighting a battle with mental health issues, aged 62.

Robin Smith will always be remembered as one of the finest talents to have played for England. He was one of those players whom I really admired. His passing away is a loss to cricket.

RIP Robin Smith !!
