When it is not going your way, it is not going your way. Manchester United realised, as their trip to West London to face Brentford ended in a 3-1 sting from ‘ The Bees ‘, that it was not their day.
The knives would be out for Ruben Amorim, but what can the poor Manager do when the players themselves do not perform to the best of their abilities? There is a lot to learn from Brentford, who were superb and are getting back their mojo.
The opening contest of Match Day 6 of the English Premier League 2025-26, was held at the Gtech Community Stadium as Brentford played host to Manchester United.
Igor Thiago, Brentford’s Brazilian forward, got a long ball, unmarked, with acres of space and powered one past a hapless Altay Bayindir. United appealed for offside, but were denied. Brentford were ahead, and 12 minutes later, in the 20th minute, a fine move by Kevin Schade from the left set up Thiago perfectly for a fine goal. Altay Bayindir tried to stop, but the ball rolled over beneath him. The Bees had 2 already.
Benjamin Sesko finally scored for United 6 minutes later in a goal mouth scramble, putting the ball in the net on his third attempt.
United tried to dominate, stitched up moves and secured a penalty when Mbeumo was brought down in the penalty box, but Bruno Fernandes fired a weak shot that was easily blocked by the very skilful Caoimhin Kelleher. United missed the opportunity to get level, and Brentford made them pay.
In their desperation to score, Manchester United left their defences for the Bees, and Mathias Jensen scored with a ripper of a strike, 5 minutes into stoppage time.
Brentford had given United a serious check and beaten them most convincingly, 3-1. Ruben Amorim watched in despair as his team went down yet again.
Keith Andrews, first time coach of Brentford, was an extremely happy man, who, without a doubt, is coming to terms with his job and instead of making a meal of it, is enjoying the challenge and trying to make it happen. Brentford are certainly here to stay.
The same can’t be said about Amorim. The once brilliant, successful Manager looks bewildered, angry and upset and may not survive the cauldron he has fallen into.
