Ryan Gravenberch proved his mettle once again for Liverpool by putting up an exhilarating performance against Everton, their city rivals. The 247th Merseyside Derby went in Liverpool’s favour, winning their 5th consecutive match of the EPL 25/26 season, with a 2-1 margin, at Anfield a few minutes ago.
The first half belonged to Liverpool completely. Ryan Gravenberch, the Dutchman scored in the 10th minute from a Mo Salah assist. It was not as easy as it looked. Though Salah found his man perfectly, the ball bounced and spun a bit as it came awkwardly, but Gravenberch used his height to circumvent the bounce and directed the ball into the net like a crosscourt whip. The skill and finishing were tremendous from Gravenberch.
In the 29th minute, Gravenberch set up Hugo Etikite with a lovely pass that cut through the Everton defence, and once again the Frenchman produced a brilliant finish. With the defender so close to him, he released the ball with perfect timing, displaying his class as a striker.
Liverpool were 2-0 up at halftime, but Everton just woke up after the break and put Liverpool under some serious pressure, which eventually resulted in a tremendous goal from Idrissa Guehe. Everton appear to be a changed side and look much better compared to the previous seasons, where they had been struggling to survive in the EPL. But David Moyes is handling the team well, it seems.
Liverpool, however, survived the onslaught from the Toffees, though only just, and should look to be more enterprising when they are ahead in the game. The defending champions should not lift the pedal off the gas.
Alexander Isak got a look in for a good 30 minutes, and so did Florian Wirtz, but nothing substantial could come from the presence of the two big stars.
Now perched right at the top and the only team to have won all 5 games in the EPL so far, Liverpool have taken a good stride forward.
