There is a new Scandinavian surge in Football named Norway, led by the goal-scoring machine Erling Haaland. The Norwegians in Group I of the European qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are leaving the pack behind, firmly entrenched at the top. With 5 wins from 5 games, Norway are virtually galloping towards a World Cup spot since making it to the greatest event in the Sport in 1998.
Norway have been brilliant with their striking abilities, in beating Moldova twice and getting past Israel, Estonia, and staunch group rivals Italy. In the process, they have scored 24 goals and conceded just 3 goals ( of which one was an own goal )with 3 clean sheets.
How good Norway have been can be gauged from their performance against Moldova. The Scandinavian stars annihilated Moldova 11-1 at the Ullevaal Stadion in Oslo, with Erling Haaland scoring 5 goals in a breathtaking performance.
Haaland became the first Norwegian in a century to score 5 goals in a match playing for Norway and became the only European to score 5 times in a World Cup Qualifier since Hans Krankl, who scored 6 times for Austria against Malta in 1977.
Norway’s performance has put tremendous pressure on Italy, who are 6 points adrift in second place, having played one game less than Norway. The Italians were blanked 3-0 on the 7th of June this year at Oslo, and in all probability their re-match on the 16th of November at the San Siro may well decide the outcome of the group. But Norway appear favourites to win the group and qualify.
With a strong team comprising of Haaland and Odegaard and a terrific defense featuring Ryerson, Ajer and Wolfe, make Norway a formidable unit.
Italy, who were pushed by Israel a few days ago, may just struggle to get past Norway.
The Scandinavian Uprising is here to stay, led by Norway for sure.
