Aryna Sabalenka will be striding at the Arthur Ashe Stadium to defend her US Open title against Amanda Anisimova in a few hours from now.
There is a lot of buzz around the match, as Sabalenka and Anisimova will again face off after about 7 weeks. Their last meeting was at the Centre Court of the All-England Club, in the semi-finals of the Ladies’ Singles at Wimbledon. Anisimova, against all odds and expectations, had beaten Sabalenka in a thrilling 3-set encounter.
It is Sabalenka’s turn to return the favour. But Anisimova has only improved after their meeting on the 10th of July, and her performance so far in the US Open is nothing but spectacular. She got past Swiatek and then got the better of Naomi Osaka to earn her right to play Sabalenka.
The defending Champion is not looking any worse. She, too, has played some spectacular tennis decorated with strong serving and thunderous groundstrokes. She appears mentally tougher, which is a big positive change and the one major attribute that will serve her best in the match.
There have been 6 different winners in the last 6 years, and if Sabalenka manages to defend her title, it will be a great performance. But Anisimova might just spoil the party.
