If ever the history of Sport is written, Novak Djokovic will surely find a place amongst the greatest athletes and sportsmen to have exhibited his skill and enthralled sports lovers.
The Serbian once again and for the umpteenth time showed his indefatigable spirit and a top-notch game to beat US hope, Taylor Fritz in 4 sets 6-3, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium to set up a mouth-watering semi-final clash against Carlos Alcaraz.
Fritz was not far behind, but the skill and the temperament to play well on big points make a Champion, which is what Djokovic is made of, and though Fritz matched Djokovic stroke for stroke, he just missed when it really mattered.
The American should have won the second set, and though he came back and won the third, it was all too late. Djokovic losing after winning the first two sets is never heard of, and the great Serbian closed out the match in a pulsating 10th game of the 4th set.
Serving at 4-5, Fritz was severely under pressure and though he saved two match points, he double-faulted on the third to give the set and match to Djokovic.
There is still a significant chasm between the group of Sinner, Alcaraz, and Djokovic and the rest of the ATP field. The men’s tennis has become extremely skewed, and unless Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, and even Jack Draper improve, the chasm is likely to remain.
A big semi-final showdown between Novak Djokovic and Alcaraz is coming up.
