The Defending Champions of the RSL ( Roshn Saudi League), commonly referred to as Saudi Pro League, Al-Ittihad, began the defense of their title with an away game to Najran against hosts Al-Akhdoud.
The last season was all Al-Ittihad’s as they dominated proceedings and won the coveted crown. Brilliantly led by Karim Benzema, who himself scored 21 goals and guided his team to remarkable success.
The Champions showed no signs of any rustiness whatsoever, as they combined efficiently and with great purpose to get going within 4 minutes of the game, and to top it all, it was business as usual as captain Benzema scored with ease in the 4th minute.
Bergwijn got the second goal 3 minutes later, before an own goal from Al-Akhdoud got the champions the 3rd. Benzema added another two in the 51st and 60th minutes. His header was exceptional, and so was his exquisite finish for his hat trick.
Karim Benzema looked sharp in his approach and was able to position himself in the right place at the right time. His anticipation was brilliant, and his finishing even better. The hallmark of a great striker that Benzema has been over the years.
Al-Akhdoud ‘s Sebastian Pedroza was the only shining light for the Club from Najran. The Colombian scored a brace with two top-notch efforts. One, a header in the 27th minute, which could have made any striker proud, and one was a powerful, precise strike in the 57th minute.
Al-Ittihad were clinical in their performance and have set the stage for an exciting Saudi Pro League.
