Nottingham Forest had a season to remember in 24/25, and for me, The Tricky Trees were the toast of the EPL. The team played brilliantly under the watchful eyes of their coach, Nuno, and though they slightly went off the radar in the closing stages of the season, Nottingham Forest still managed an outstanding outing.
Brentford have also been very impressive in the past 3 EPL ventures, and therefore their visit to Nottingham in the first match of the new season had great expectations. Though Brentford had had a series of changes in their squad and, more importantly, the departure of Thomas Frank, their long-time coach, had cast aspersions on their performance this season, the Bees were looking to sting the Tricky Trees big time. A test for new manager Keith Andrews was awaiting at the City Ground.
Chris Wood, the tall Nottingham striker was a revelation last season, scoring 20 goals and arguably was one of the main reasons for Nottingham’s success. The good news was that nothing had changed for Chris Wood as he produced a sublime finish to get Forest ahead in just the 5th minute. The City Ground was up in raptures. Chris Wood was at it again.
It was then the turn of debutant Dan Ndoye. The Swiss International transferred from Bologna, struck in the 42nd minute with a fine header as Brentford continued to be under the pump.
Just before halftime, Chris Wood got a lovely through ball, ran into the box, beat the goalkeeper, and tapped into the open goal to get his second and the third for Nottingham. It was indeed a terrific finish from Chris Wood. The match was effectively over in the first half itself.
Brentford earned a penalty later and with it a consolation goal. Though Thiago converted the penalty for Brentford, he was not impressive enough. Brentford played some passive football. They neither defended well nor attacked with great venom. It was much too pedestrian. It doesn’t look that good for Brentford. I hope my fears do not turn into reality for the Bees.
For The Tricky Trees, it was a tremendous start to the new season. They are looking good, and it would be interesting to see how far they get through this year.
