The atmosphere at Anfield was riveting as fans sang for Diogo Jota in an emotional start to the Premier League season 2025-26. Wearing black arm bands, the Reds took the field against Bournemouth in what was to become a pulsating night of exceptional football.
Mo Salah produced an astounding left footer, which was parried away in a sensational save by Petrovic, Bournemouth’s goalkeeper, as Liverpool made their intentions clear as they pressed for their first goal of the new season.
Hugo Etikite, Liverpool’s new signing got the Reds going with a fine controlled strike in the 37th minute from a Mac Allister pass to send the Anfield crowd into raptures. The Frenchman showed why he was so highly rated. Cody Gakpo then produced another brilliant strike from the edge of the box in the 49th minute to send Liverpool 2 goals clear. The match was going Liverpool’s way, but a twist was waiting to happen.
Antoine Semenyo turned the match on its head with two superb strikes. First, in the 64th minute, a defensive lapse allowed Semenyo to sneak the ball under Alisson Becker, and then 12 minutes later, the Ghanaian International produced a remarkable solo run from his box to that of Liverpool and scored with an incredible finish to the left of Becker. The great Goalkeeper was wrong-footed by the placement, and Bournemouth were right into the match.
A victory, though, was required as restive Liverpool fans started feeling the pressure. But Arne Slot came up once again with an inspired substitution. Federico Chiesa came in and scored his first Premier League goal with a brilliant volley to put Liverpool ahead once again in the 88th minute. It was again a high-class finish from the Italian. The crowd, which had gone quiet after Semenyo’s double strike, was up and roaring again.
Four minutes into stoppage time, Salah latched on to a Wataru Endo clearance, got past a couple of defenders, and struck with his right foot to score the 4th for Liverpool. It was yet another staggering finish from the Egyptian legend. The crowd went up in a frenzy as the referee blew the long whistle. Liverpool had won 4-2 in an absolutely dramatic second half.
The Fans sang for Diogo Jota again as Mo Salah left the field in tears in memory of his departed teammate. The scenes at Anfield were incredible. The world had witnessed one of the finest opening games in Premier League history, and that too in a sombre atmosphere. Bournemouth gave their best, but Liverpool were too good on the day.
The Reds are up and running, but the cherries are not too far behind.
