The season 2025-26 of the most decorated English Premier League begins tonight at Anfield, Liverpool. The Champions of season 2024-25 will be locking horns with tricky opponents, Bournemouth, to begin the defence of their Title.
A lot has happened since the last season ended, and particularly for Liverpool, it has been a period of deep sorrow. The sudden passing away of Diogo Jota was a massive jolt to the Reds, the tremors of which will be felt in the first game. There is no guessing that the shadow of Diogo Jota’s death shall linger, as the new season begins.
There has also been quite a tremor with regard to the spate of transfers in and out of Liverpool. The Champions will be without the services of Trent Alexander-Arnold Arnold who had been one of their finest performers, moving on to Real Madrid. Luis Diaz, who had been instrumental in Liverpool’s success, particularly last year, has since moved to Germany to play for Bayern Munich. Darwin Nunez, who had a checkered stay with the Reds but was finding his feet with the team, could not resist a call from the Saudi Pro League. He would be playing for Al-Hilal. Jarell Quansah, a talented midfielder, has travelled to play for Bayer Leverkusen.
The Reds’ squad, no wonder, has shaken up, but then Arne Slot has managed to pull in some very good players into the squad too. Florian Wirtz, one of the finest midfielders in the game as on date, has been a big pick for Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen. Jeremie Frimpong, the Dutchman and a very capable defender, would be looking to play a Trent Alexander-Arnold, while Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt would be bolstering Liverpool’s forward line.
Milos Kerkez transferred from Bournemouth, would be up against his former teammates as the Hungarian takes his position alongside Virgil van Dijk in the defence. It would be interesting to witness how Milos performs tonight.
For Bournemouth, there is not much of a change apart from the big sale of Milos Kerkez to Liverpool. The Cherries remain more or less the same side that traumatised oppositions at home. Justin Kluivert and Antoine Semenyo would again be shouldering goal-scoring responsibilities. Adam Smith would be leading the side and manning the defence along with new entrant Bafode Diakite.
It is going to be an interesting night, with pressure on Liverpool to start on a winning note. The Reds losing to Crystal Palace in the Community Shield a few days ago would have added additional stress. But Liverpool have the quality to deliver and, in my opinion, should come up trumps against the visiting Cherries.
Liverpool vs Bournemouth coming up in a few hours from now.
