In one of the most dramatic of matches played out at the Oval, India staged a fight back unseen, unheard to win the 5th Test by a whisker of 6 and draw the most enthralling series I have ever seen 2-2. A result so fair and just as if ordained from the heavens.
Mohd Siraj produced a bowling performance so rare, so outlandish, so unprecedented and so singularly unreal that it is difficult to accurately explain in words. So monumental his effort has been. Again it feels like an ordainment from the sky. His reservoir of energy brimming with infinite capacity and his belief in himself, amongst all the clatter, so solemn, that it would have been a shame if Siraj had ended on the losing side. He had his share of misery and it was time to revel in all the glory.
Siraj produced 2 brilliant yorkers in England’s chase. With the first one he got Zak Crawley and with the second one he ended Gus Atkinson’s resilience to hand India one of its greatest wins on foreign soil.
A sensational Harry Brook and the ever consistent Joe Root had got England to the doorstep of victory, but India’s grit did not allow England to get past the door as Siraj and Prasidh Krishna raised their game.
The brain fade moment of Jacob Bethell and the nervy hands of Jamie Smith in the chase pulled England away from victory as Chris Woakes’ unfortunate injury made England sweat.
Siraj in the end prevailed as India defied England to close out the series on an exceptional high.
The Legend of Siraj will be heard for Years.
