Wimbledon Begins 30th June
The most iconic of Grand Slams is just around the corner. The Wimbledon begins on 30th June, and the two-week Tennis extravaganza will hold the attention of the Sporting fraternity.
Steeped In Tradition
Steeped in Tradition, Wimbledon has players wearing whites only, which is quite a picture with green, manicured courts and purple hoardings in the background. The contrast is majestic and come what may, the organisers have unflinchingly upheld this convention. No wonder Wimbledon has been able to carve out a niche for itself.
Legendary Tennis
The Tennis too has been legendary with some great matches and rivalries showcased over the years. My memory goes down to the battles between John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg. The heartbreaks of Ivan Lendl. The belligerence of Boris Becker. The cool sophistication of Stefan Edberg. The brilliance of Pete Sampras. The guile and sublimity of Roger Federer. The greatness of Novak Djokovic and of course, the coming of age of Carlos Alcaraz.
Fierce Rivalries
The ladies’ competition has witnessed some tremendous match-ups too. The great rivalry between Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert. The fearsome dominance of Steffi Graf. The tears of Jana Novotna and a plethora of young talents basking in the glory of Wimbledon.
Great Expectations This Year
This year too, it is not going to be different. Carlos Alcaraz will be upto it. He would be defending his title with brazen claws while Jannik Sinner would be churning inside for revenge for his extraordinary French Open loss. The greatest of all, Novak Djokovic, would be a real threat too.
Iconic Moments In The Offing
Aryna Sabalenka would be gunning for the Wimbledon Title no end. Coco Gauff, her nemesis, basking in the glory of her French Open Title, would be contemplating another table-turner against the fiery but temperamental Sabalenka. Their rivalry is ascending towards epic proportions, and another iconic contest may well be on the cards. Not to forget the former Champion Elena Rybakina, a dangerous floater in the wings.
As Exciting As Ever
Wimbledon has always given the fans something to ponder every year and look forward to this tournament, always. I am excited as ever to witness my favourite Grand Slam as the rains settle in and the weather cools off.
